The Government has announced a further boost to local transport that should give local people greater access to jobs, education and public services.
Thanks to this new funding, on top of last year’s £8 million uplift for better buses, Leicestershire County Council now has the opportunity to improve public transport and push forward schemes that strengthen connectivity for local people.
This is part of a wider government announcement providing an extra £104 million to towns and rural areas across the country to improve local transport. The funding will also help councils deliver projects that make it easier for people to reach work, shops, and essential services, supporting the growth of local economies.
Amanda Hack MP, said:
“In North West Leicestershire, we know that good local transport links are a lifeline for so many people. Reliable bus routes, safer roads, and better accessibility are essential to helping people get to work, visit friends, or attend urgent appointments.
That’s why I’m disappointed that Leicestershire County Council has forced through further service cuts in our area, despite receiving significant funding to protect and improve rural connectivity. There are no more excuses, our Labour Government is providing the cash, and I will continue to battle for better buses and our fair share of this investment.
For too long, other parts of Leicestershire have seen more support while our area has faced repeated cuts. It’s time local people finally got the public services they deserve.
I’m pleased that ministers are listening to my calls and delivering the funding to transform transport in our communities, now the new administration at County Hall must do the same and deliver for North West Leicestershire.”
Labour’s Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said:
“Good transport connections are the foundation of thriving communities, which is why we’re backing local authorities to transform journeys for millions of people across England.
This investment will help councils to improve transport for local people – from cleaner buses to safer cycling routes – connecting communities with jobs, education and essential services. By putting resources directly into the hands of local leaders, we’re ensuring every part of the country benefits from better transport links that support economic growth and provide opportunity – all part of our Plan for Change.”
