This week saw the opening of the Family Hub in Coalville. You might have been familiar with the venue…it was the main Coalville Sure Start.

A flagship policy from the Labour Government was Sure Starts. Which made such a difference to so many families including my own.

A universal service available and created to cover about 800-1000 children and families with a 0-5 yr old. In Leicestershire we were faced with half of these centres closing and the decision was made by the lead Conservative group in 2018.

Amanda Hack said “At the start of Sunak’s tenure he decided that the first 1001 days of a child’s life was important…and returned to focus on the very thing that sure starts were designed to do. Yet the Tories couldn’t possibly name them something anyone recognised…nope they decided to rebrand to Family Hubs. Yet they are not as well funded and actually the family hub support received in Leicestershire was one of 12 grants offered…”

So not Universal…if you get these services it’s if the Local Authority has decided to support them or been lucky enough to receive a grant.
