North West Leicestershire Labour Group fully recognises the need for the development of a new 4G multi-sport facility in Ashby de la Zouch. Under a Labour-led District Council, the site just south of the B587 (Nottingham Road), which is council-owned, would be selected as the priority location. The long-awaited project to deliver a modern, all-weather 4G pitch for Ashby is a vital investment in the community’s sporting future. Local clubs and families have consistently called for better facilities due to significant growth in recent years.
Cllr Peter Moult, Labour lead for Communities, said:
“Following the growth in Ashby during recent years, the demand for sports facilities has grown significantly. We believe Ashby deserves good sports facilities that are accessible to everyone. That’s why the Labour group is committed to delivering this 4G pitch at the council-owned site just south of the B587, which is publicly owned and ideally located. It’s time to stop delaying and commit to this site. The location offers a sustainable, strategic solution that benefits from existing public ownership, meaning lower costs to the taxpayer and more control for the community. It also helps open the door to additional funding streams, further reducing the cost to the taxpayer. We believe this approach ensures the long-term interests of local people.”
Labour Group Leader Cllr John Legrys added:
“If we were running the Council, this project would already be moving forward with preparatory work underway, not waiting on an expensive consultation. The council has tens of millions in
reserve, which the Alliance refuses to allocate toward local investment. The Portfolio Holder knows the Local Government Reorganisation process will prevent legacy councils from making spending commitments beyond a certain date. While this date is unconfirmed, decisions on deadlines are expected later this year. As a result, this reserve funding is at risk if not urgently allocated to projects such as this. Residents deserve action, and we’re ready to work with all councillors to get it done. I know Ashby councillors on all sides are keen to see progress for local people. We’re ready to deliver for local sport and our communities.”
