This is a real opportunity for farmers, businesses and residents to set out what is working, what isn’t, and what needs to change. - Amanda Hack Member of Parliament for North West Leicestershire

Residents, farmers and businesses across North West Leicestershire are being invited to help shape the future of the rural economy following the launch of a national call for evidence by the Labour Rural Research Group (LRRG).

The initiative will feed into a new report looking ahead to 2040, examining how rural areas can unlock long-term growth, resilience and opportunity, and what practical steps are needed during this Parliament to achieve it.

Building on previous reports on rural Britain and rural poverty, the latest work will focus on the real-world barriers facing rural communities, including access to investment, skills, infrastructure, and support for rural businesses.

With much of North West Leicestershire made up of rural towns and villages, the area is set to play an important role in shaping the evidence base, ensuring local experiences are reflected in national policy development.

Following the launch, Amanda Hack said:

“I’ve been lucky to meet so many people in North West Leicestershire who contribute to our rural economy, and it’s vital that local voices are heard in shaping the policies that will define its future. This is a real opportunity for farmers, businesses and residents to set out what is working, what isn’t, and what needs to change to unlock long-term growth and opportunity for our area.”

Rural areas remain central to the UK’s economy, with strong agricultural heritage, growing small businesses, and skilled local workforces. However, many communities continue to face structural challenges that limit growth and opportunity.

The LRRG is now encouraging local stakeholders, including farmers, business owners, community organisations and residents, to submit their views on the opportunities and challenges facing rural Britain.

Submissions can be made via: https://www.labourruralresearchgroup.com/about-3

The final report will set out practical policy recommendations to support rural communities and ensure they are not left behind in the drive for national growth.
