The Labour group has called for the proposed 38 homes on the site to the rear of Stenson House to remain publicly owned, as part of efforts to tackle the local housing crisis.
The plans for the site include a mix of housing types and sizes, set around a mews-style courtyard with pedestrian pathways linking into newly created gardens at the front of Stenson House. Additional green space, landscaping, and new tree planting are also part of the development.
Labour councillors have stressed that public ownership of these homes is crucial to providing genuinely affordable housing for local families, the elderly and disabled. With housing demand rising in Coalville, leaving the properties in private hands risks limiting access for those most in need.

This scheme could deliver real benefits if developed with local people at the heart of it - Cllr John Legrys, Labour Group Leader
Responding to the public consultation Labour Group Leader, John Legrys said:
“We are well short of new council housing across North West Leicestershire, not just in the Coalville urban area. This scheme could deliver real benefits if developed with local people at the heart of it. The new homes that are being proposed must remain under council ownership to provide genuinely affordable housing for the elderly, disabled and families.
The housing waiting list in the district continues to grow, and it’s only the Labour Group that proposes to acquire or build more council-owned homes each year to try and address this crisis. The Alliance are yet to get a grip on this serious issue; keeping these proposed homes in public hands would be a good start.”
