The Labour Group has welcomed the ruling Alliance’s U-turn to install a card and contactless payment machine at Money Hill Car Park, a move that follows the Labour Group’s and local communities’ calls for greater accessibility.
Earlier this week, Labour councillors raised serious concerns over the lack of a payment machine at the newly opened car park, which had been operating as a “pay by phone only” facility. Their call was backed by strong community support, with many residents highlighting the difficulties caused by poor mobile signal and the exclusion of those without access to smartphones or mobile payment apps.
Money Hill Ward Councillor Murrae Blair Park said:
“This is a victory for common sense and local people. This is what happens when a community gets behind an issue. We’ve been clear from the start that every resident and visitor should be able to pay easily and without barriers. I’m pleased the ruling group on the district has listened and agreed to install a card and contactless machine at Money Hill Car Park. We’ll continue to monitor progress to ensure this happens within the 6-8 week stated period.
It’s now imperative that the County Council work with us to reopen Footpath 089 connecting this car park to the town, helping to facilitate its use moving forward.”
Labour Communities Lead, Cllr Peter Moult, added:
“Local voices matter, and we were determined to stand up for inclusion and accessibility, and I’m pleased that a solution is now being delivered. This change will make the car park far more accessible and help ease parking pressures across the town.”
The Labour Group has confirmed that they will continue to press for clear signage and timely installation to ensure the new payment option is available as soon as possible.
